Schaefer Family Adventures: January 2021

A new year is here.  I begin a new year of blogging our family adventures, big and small, ordinary and extraordinary.  I love the rhythm of these posts, documenting my growing family. Even if I was the only one who scrolls through them, it’s worth it.

January was a slow, quiet month at home.  We slowly regained a schedule over the month. I have found having a consistent schedule brings me peace. As much as I love all of the holidays in December, it does feel a bit chaotic and I was relieved to enter into January.

We have entered into Ordinary Time, liturgically and I was reminded by John that the green color is a sign of growing. It helps me to keep this in mind, in the mundane of ordinary life, it is a time of growth.  My children are growing and changing daily.  John is continuously surprising me with connections he’s making as he’s observing his world. Grace’s language has just exploded and she expresses herself so well, with her tiny adorable voice. Even when she’s being obstinate, Matthew and I can’t help but smile because her defiance is voiced in the most adorable way.

Some highlights of January were playing with sand and play dough, outdoor play in the backyard and researching the best paper airplane designs. John can usually be found lining up his cars and Grace is typically surrounded with her animal figurines.  Yes, they fight, yes they make tons of messes, yes the days are long and I often feel like a referee. But it’s the growing season! They are growing more and more into who God made them to be and it’s an honor to witness it daily.
